Musafer Qassim—born in 1991—is a contemporary artist based in Leipzig. He completed his postgraduate studies/Meisterschüler with Prof. Michael Riedel at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig (HGB) in September 2024. Prior to that, he graduated with distinction under the supervision of Prof. Christoph Ruckhäberle.
‘In his mostly large-format paintings, he deals with his [...] origins [...] in an impressive way. Impressive because, despite the gestural application of colour, there is always a hint of a figure, a house, a narrative element. But it is also impressive because Musafer Qassim uses his colours with a force that deliberately thwarts any emergence of pleasing beauty. When Musafer Qassim paints, he always seems to have worked too much colour into the fabric: The ochre creates bubbles. The green wrinkles, in the brown jagged craters emerge. At times part of the canvas remains unpainted. But this only emphasises the massive areas of colour applied directly next to it. The choppiness of the colour application does not appear disturbing at all, as Musafer Qassim has found an inherently logical painterly equivalent that does justice to the urgency of his subject matter: How else can exclusion and the experience of flight, but also arrival, new beginnings, and the future be depicted— except with a resolutely directed brush from which the colour flies in all directions?’
